In addition to informing Monterra of a fraud or scam, it’s wise to report the crime to other reliable sources to help make the internet a safer environment for everyone.
- Internet Crime Complaint Center-This FBI-run division dedicated to cybercrime gathers information from the public to help in the fight against illegal internet activity.
- Federal Communications Commission-Filing a complaint here provides the FCC with valuable information that affects policy decisions and potential enforcement actions.
- Federal Trade Commission-This is the federal government’s website for reporting fraud and scams. Information is available in several languages.
- Local Law Enforcement-File your report close to home by contacting your local police department. Provide as much documentation as you can, including bank statements, credit card charges, emails, and texts.
Alert the nation’s three credit-reporting agencies.
Notifying the credit-reporting agencies when you’ve been a victim of fraud is essential for several reasons:
- They can place alerts or freezes on your credit report, making it harder for thieves to open new accounts in your name.
- They can continue to monitor your report for unusual or suspicious activity.
- They can remove inaccuracies from your report that may have resulted from the fraud.
- In some cases, they can provide identity-theft protection services to assist you in recovering from fraud.
- Equifax: 800-525-6285 (dedicated fraud-alert line)
- Experian: 888-EXPERIAN (888-397-3742)
- TransUnion: 800-916-8800
- Annualcreditreport.com
Monterra will never call, text, or email you to ask for your account numbers, Social Security number, ATM or debit card PIN, or any other sensitive information. What’s more, we simplify the process of verifying and authenticating emails and texts from us.
