Please choose "I am an employee or member of a partner organization" and then choose "County of San Mateo Employees" from the drop-down menu. 1. Attending a workshop or seminar: These informative, free classes are typically held either on-site at your organization or at Monterra Credit Union's headquarters. Topics include first-time homebuying, building credit, identity theft, budgeting and saving, planning for retirement, and more. Check your Human Resources team to see when Monterra Credit Union is scheduled for our next on-site event, or you can send us an email to find out what's coming up.
2. Learn online, anytime: Monterra Credit Union offers 25+ online financial education courses across a wide variety of topics. These interactive courses take 10-20 minutes each and work well on your desktop or mobile, so you can take them anywhere at any time.
3. Get one-on-one financial coaching: The Financial Wellness Team at Monterra Credit Union provides two great consultation options. You will need the following information and documents to complete an application online or at a branch:
- A social security number, VISA, Individual Tax ID number (ITIN and VISA holders will need to visit a branch to open an account) for each applicant.
- Physical address for each individual's residence, and, if different, the individual's mailing address and proof of residence i.e.: utility bill, transcript, pay stub
- 2 forms of ID: One government photo ID i.e.: Driver's license, passport, matricula card AND a second non-photo ID e.g.: library card, debit or credit card, or student ID.
If you are a County of San Mateo employee, please contact your department's payroll specialist for the County's direct deposit payroll authorization form. We are happy to help complete the form with your new account number and Monterra CU routing number by contact us at [email protected].

Beyond the seven Peninsula branches, Monterra CU offers Online Banking, a Mobile Banking app for iPhone and Android, and free access to over 30,000 ATMs nationwide through the CO-OP network.
There is no membership fee to join Monterra Credit Union, but you must deposit and keep at least one dollar ($1) in your regular savings account at all times. Additional deposit accounts each have their own minimum opening deposit amounts:
- Free Checking: $20
- Premium Checking: $50
- Regular Certificates: $1,000 (in most cases)
- Money Market Account: $2,500
So depending on the accounts you wish to open, the total minimum opening deposit balance will vary. For a list of all accounts, rates, and minimum opening balances, please see our rates page.
